Transportation resources

Medicare and ambulance transportation

Coverage and transportation arrangements are separate questions. Ask about both before a planned trip.

All resources

01 / Understand

The general coverage principle

Medicare Part B may cover ambulance transportation when other transportation could endanger the patient’s health and the applicable requirements are met. Certain non-emergency trips may qualify. An appointment or a request alone does not establish coverage.

02 / Prepare

Ask about your own plan

Contact Medicare or the member-services number on the insurance card about benefits, authorization and possible patient costs. Requirements can differ by coverage and circumstances. This page does not determine eligibility or promise payment.

03 / Plan

Confirm the transportation separately

Even when coverage is discussed, the trip itself still needs an arrangement. Ask the transport provider about the proposed journey and any documentation it requires. Keep insurance identifiers and medical details out of general email.

The next step

A question about the next trip?

Contact MEDICS for a planned transportation discussion. For a life-threatening emergency, call 911.
